That is true, and there is a strong possibility for termites.
For those 2 reasons, I’d stay away from the free city/county mulch.

Free city mulch, is known to be FILLED with tons of weeds. They grind up anything.
In that case, you get what you pay for.

When spreading mulch...dont even bother with a shovel - buy a 10 tine/ prong pitch fork if you dont have one. Go with the long handle. Dont go wider or shorter or you're just tire yourself out...

As the mulch breaks down it will rob your soil of nitrogen so it’s a good idea to fertilize your small plants especially if you see the tell-tell sign of yellowing leaves.
