Sounds like this is a secondary drive not your OS drive, is that right? If so, open the Event Viewer and look for Disk errors. Also check something that can read the S.M.A.R.T. data of the drive.

Have you tried Safe Mode? Be sure to have a working empty drive ready. Boot the computer in Safe Mode. If it let you, backup everything.
