X10 and Insteon have been around forever. While they aren't the most innovative, their protocol is solid and typically more reliable and responsive than zigbee and z-wave.

Mine are. I think you'd need a hub to to get a message. You might be able to link it to the valve (to turn off the water supply) or another module without a hub, I've never tried.

I'm not very knowledgeable on this, but from what I gathered: your router can only handle so many devices constantly talking on your Wi-Fi, a hub essentially reduces that load to 1.
