Lead is much more expensive than iron. Why would any body uses lead in iron castings? Any experts here care to explain?

Stop. Just ... stop. Maybe you've eaten too many peeling paint chips as a child, I don't know. However, I don't believe that a six pack would be enough to convince me that you know about...

Lets stick to the original argument. mr_rolla used lead's low melting point as evidence to support his conclusion that cast iron doesn't contain lead. You discredited him by saying the lead's...

I'm not biased, I'm experienced. I have doubts whether your dear writer Tamara has ever had a class in metallurgy. I doubt that you have either, as evidenced by what you wrote here. There are...

You are being "biased" in your opinion. The writer cited the higher melting points between iron and lead and her conclusion is no lead. She continues on to say lead can be found on cast iron for...

You might want to go back and read that again. "I advise that if you do not know the ORIGIN of your cast iron pans that it is a good idea to test them for lead." If your cast iron comes from...

I wasn't intended to get into the debate other than stating the scientific facts. https://tamararubin.com/2015/12/ask-tamara-does-cast-iron-have-lead-are-cast-iron-pans-safe/ According to the...

The point being that lead will NOT boil off at casting temperature. Yes, his melting temperature was correct, but his conclusion was (possibly dangerously) incorrect.

Melting vs boiling point. Both temperatures are correct.

Not true. Lead boils at 3,180°F. Any lead in the melt will be present in the final product.

Also +1 for Lodge pans. I've found that their pans are generally smoother from the factory, China pans tend to have a rougher surface. But my newer Lodge pans aren't as smooth as my 20+ year old ones...

Cast iron can withstand higher heat. For making steaks, burgers, etc you want as much heat as possible to give it a nice sear. I put my cast iron on the stove at 500-600 degrees, drop steaks in and...

I only buy/use Lodge. USA baby. Gave 2 12" Lodge skillet away to relatives. When I see deals for Lodge, still tempted to buy some to give friends/family.

Yeah.. I think about that whenever these threads come up. Why do the other manufacturers even bother?

This is truly a no-brainer. When USA-quality cast iron can be had for literally $4 more than this for a product that will literally last the rest of your grandchildren's lives, why bother with...

If the cooking surface is rough from the casting mold (often it is, even with Lodge, which is still just a mainstream brand), I recommend giving it a once over with an Avanti Pro Quick Strip Disc,...

Some people are concerned about the components used in non-stick pans. Properly seasoned and maintained cast iron is close to non-stick without those concerns. Very durable (will last generations)...

I use Lodge cast iron that’s made in America on my flat top stove. As long as you don’t drag it on the top, it doesn’t scratch.
