no entirely true. your comfort is based on temperature AND humidity levels. by reducing the humidity in your living area you can get away with setting your thermostat higher, thus saving you money.

Most people don't run dehumidifiers 24/7. It takes some of the load off of your AC unit, which may extend the life. It also prevents mold in damp basements. Anyone can justify the price if it suits...
