I think you misunderstood the feature I was asking about. I'm talkin' about loading music/podcasts onto the watch itself and not having to take my phone with me. Not using the watch as controls...

This is a false statement. It works just fine in Android 9. It does have its own app that works without any issues.

Get a latest/greatest Mi Band 4 from AliExpress. For $30 you get all the features and is more attractive looking than this (with MUCH longer battery life to boot).

Yes they do but you can't sync the watch with your phone or even run setup if it's Android 8.0+

Did you even look before commenting? You have to first connect with a phone with Android 7.0 or older, update firmware, then you can connect with Android 8.0+. There's no documentation because...
