I have an Osprey 50 and 75. Neither are technically carry-on compliant. I have found that I can carry-on if not full (so that it squishes to carry-on compliance ish size) and then check on the way...

I've found that for backpacks, as long as it doesn't look obnoxious, airlines don't give a crap. Also helps if you can actually carry it and not appear to fall backwards as you try to lift it above...
