Not really, its basically a square wave form so it adds extra stress on the motor. Although it will still probably run. The worse part is it will probably only run a 1/4 hp sump pump for 20 minutes

Because they don't buy the correct sump pump if that's a problem for them. There are manufacturers that make a sump pump system with a battery backup. Of course it costs more, but it actually works...
