I seriously doubt they are better than the average AVRs. Check out Audio Science Review. The Yamaha just reviewed is ripped a new one. As for the ESS DAC, implementation matters.

It can lower or heighten what the unit actually cost to use

While I agree the amp in the 2085 and 1070 that I also own are fairly weak compares to external power amp, but in fairness, they are far cheaper than a good power amp and the 2085 or 2080 are at...

These AVRs are consistently horrible performers, with weak amps that completely fail to meet their ratings, and stunningly bad DACs that are worse than the $10 units you get off Amazon.

True, but I would point out that the 4520 is "better" with more ch. amp. The 2080 and 2085 are practically the same with minor differences in name plate, mid chassis foot and extra year in warranty....

I doubt the A can hold much resale value over as it is not a true high end audiophile piece. If any new audio format comes around or HDMI 2.1 becomes a must have then neither will hold value.
