In real world usage the average person would not be able to discern the performance difference between the 3 and the 3a. Also, the 3a series has superior battery life.

After 3 years you won't get the Google operating system updates and probably no security updates either. But by then, the battery will be holding a much lower charge so you will want to change anyways
