I didn't have to go into any classic view (not even sure where that is), but I found it under Settings -> Edit Options.

Not saying you're wrong, but why on earth should I have to turn on a feature that savea my sent messages in my sent items folder?! Every messaging system for the last 25 years has done that...

Go into classic view, profile>settings & options> scroll down to Private Messaging and check the box that says "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default",
