I think my son would be disappointed to receive most of these sets, whereas my daughter would be quite pleased. Anecdotal, but I don't believe this is uncommon.

Sure. If we ignore history and cultural biases. Girls made up less than 10% of the LEGO market at the beginning of this decade. That didn't happen by accident.
