Unfortunately the internet rumor ST8000DM004-2CX188 is smr is not true. Seagate official publication clearly says TGMR technology, no where mention SMR. I have no clue how TGMR is different from SMR...

You're still adding overhead going over USB 3, and performance can depend on the SATA -> USB controller, along with UASP support.

I wouldn't use any hard drive that has 1 year warranty; I would even skip 2 year warranty depending on usage.

I don't believe these are SMR. The Expansion drives are normally Barracudas, it's the Backup drives that are SMR. As for relibility, WD is currently the worst rated.
