You can use offset head nails. They are still a full round head but the head is moved. Made by paslode.

This is correct. Most places are moving away from allowing clipped head nails. Wont necessarily be 'code' for a lot of people. But if you aren't doing any contractor work that is being inspected then...

Nails help when you need shear strength. Deck screws probably have way higher shear strength than you'n need and less likely to back out if the wood is exposed to the weather as I assume a fence/gate...

I'd save money and just use deck screws (GRK or something similar). As the name suggests, framing nailers are designed for framing.
