Yeah it's really an edge case issue, and for the typical sub 1m length that people buy cables, there's no real difference. About the only thing you won't see are super skinny display port cables...

TS3 Plus has more ports, but will be totally unusable with a ChromeBook. You’ll need the USB-C Pro for that.

Displayport is worse if you're trying to go longer distances without active cables or signal boosters. Since the signal voltages are lower, you also need thicker wire gauge for a given wire length...

HP actually makes a pretty high quality dock. Their dock G2 is 120w and has plenty of ports.

Hmm, yes, sorry I should’ve clarified that the ts3 plus is an older version that is only thunderbolt 3 compatible. I assumed it would be ok since he was asking for a “true thunderbolt hub”. My bad!

Two dongles is the way to go if you're looking to save money. But, you will be handicapped by the 15 watts limitation of the BUS. Docks have their own PSU and guarantees that power if delivered...

The TS3 Plus will only work on/with Thunderbolt 3 computers. The Anker doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3, only USB-C. Only this CalDigit USB-C Pro supports both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3. No compromises...

This dock is awesome. It’s one of few that works well with both Mac and PC. We are now deploying it for all new macs and all coworking spaces with both Mac and PC.

Maybe the cable failed? I've heard thunderbolt 3 cables are quite picky. I believe you can replace the cable by opening the dock up.
