You need a POE injector, can be bought specifically like that OR as a switch/POE injector (What I have). I find it unlikely that the house came with a switch, you probably have a patch panel.
It sounds like what you're referring to as a "switch" is really a patch panel. You're going to need an actual POE switch or POE injector to get it working.
