Lego.com has some sets that are only sold through them. If you are a big lego fan or collector then the VIP points amount to something more than meaningless

Agreed, not much of a slick deal when you can go to a reseller or even B&M store for better sale prices, bypassing the VIP deal when you do the math at the end.

No, the in-store purchases count as well. I've never bought off the website. They tell you in the store how many points you earned with that purchase, when you give them your email.
