No pun intended, but you should buy what you need, not based on what they sell.
Sam's might be a better option for you, as their online and in store prices are same.

they used to not care about complementary members but they've recently changed that.

I think it goes by your DL info.
You've got to go to a local store to activate .... that's when they'll enter your DL.
If you've had a Membership within 18 months, you're done .... your 30$...
