Personally you don’t have to but it would be better to have it in there so that the hot air will circulate throughout the basket.

The basket is non stick but not ceramic. There is a crisper tray that raises the food about 0.5 inches. Any fat will drip underneath. I bought a stainless steel rack that raises food 2.5 inches...
