There is no satellite phone service in OnStar. It uses regular cell towers. It does use GPS satellites to determine location. Your dad probably had occasional better luck with OnStar phone calls...

BTW- if a crook steals your car, to disable the OnStar they only need to break off the small antenna for it. I like the idea but the cost is ridiculous with Siri being on phones now
