Looks like that "cover" on the knife block is the sharping tool that sharpens it every time you pull out a knife.

I'm going to bet money you put them in the dishwasher, or you hand-washed them, but didn't dry them immediately. You can't put them in a dishwasher AND you need to dry them immediately after washing...
