sounds about right
for some reference, my Motorola Talkabout 250's, an FRS radio with 0.5W, would get the same range as that in suburbs. it had superior ERP
these are basically made like junk

That's the range I would expect. I've tested similar power FRS radios (older Motorola models) and got about 1 3/4 miles but it was very hit or miss/position sensitive. Under 1/4 mile it worked well...

By cord, do you mean using a corded earpiece/microphone with this? If so, not sure why that would be an issue if the radio was upright. I'm assuming that the radio is being attached using the handle...
