When you run a single stick, I am assuming you are using the first DIMM slot. There are two other things to try:

I wouldn't sell the original stick until you know for sure that the 64GB congiration works. In fact, I'd test it with Windows first (if you haven't wiped it off the drive yet). But that's just me.
