I see in device manager a reference to usb 3.0. I believe that’s my best option. This is an I7 2 ghz from 2014. So what drive would you recommend?

Ah this will go along nicely with my 2TB 980 pro I got for 315 a while back. 1tb boot and 2TB for steam. Now I just need two 1tb Sata 970 EVOS to archive my movies.

No, it plugs into a M.2 NVMe slot. You'd need a M.2 adapter card if you don't have an open slot.
