I second the suggestion of using the aquaclear sponges. I do in most of my tanks. They’re easy to cut to size for just about any application.

No, they were workhorses 20 years ago, they are made with cheaper motors and plastic now and won't hold up the same way. It's a lottery if you will have a well built one.
