Yes. Ambient mode will stay when you are out of range. You do not have to connect to your phone at all if you only want to use ambient mode.

Buds+ are $56 on Samsung’s site with Edu discount + any headset recycle (could be $1 buds). Buds+ is much better than the original Buds in terms of call quality and battery life.
