Ads should only be on lock screen and they can be easily removed. I'm not a fan of FireOS, but the toolkit makes them a mostly Android tab. Google Play store, Gmail, Maps, Hangouts, etc.

GF has an iPhone 6 from around 7 years ago and an iPhone 4S from around 10 years ago that both still work fine on battery. Never been replaced.
Charging was a lot gentler on batteries back then.
