I use 20 lb braid on 30 series reels without any issue whatsoever. Those ratings are really just to tell you how much line the reel will use. Obviously putting something like 50 lb test on it...

I won't call it overkill. Bigger wheels are heavier, it may sacrifice some sensitivity and put more stress on your arm.
