Technically, yes. But it'd be a waste of money. You'll never see the speed benefit this drive offers with the iMac's USB 2.0 ports which are 20x slower.

I never measured the temperature on my 1tb version but it does get hot if you're transferring a large file. I've had zero issues though in a year or so of ownership.
