I just got mine and it's a sturdy beast. The blade is sharper than I would expect. One dumb thing the mfg did was put a sticker on the sheath. That's me nitpicking but otherwise the sheath is decent.

I have used one of these for over 15 years and if you are hacking at thick roots get a machete. There are some really idiotic suggestions in this thread and most will result in an ER visit.

It's meant to be a blunt tool. The serrated edge will hold with normal use, the straight edge doesn't need to be sharpened. Does your shovel have a honed edge?
