You can use whatever you want. All it does is spray it before it vacuums it up. I used it on chairs, carpets and seats.. it got rid of a ton of nasty stains.. It doesn't work as well on the mattress...

You are thinking about the bissel spot bot cleaner, this one does not do the auto clean like the spot bot does. This is just a hose and handle, have to manually operate it. but yes to your point...
