It also makes a nice buffet for birds that eat ants. There's a finch who will sit on the pole and enjoy a nice meal of the ants that are either in the moat or heading towards it.

They're usually pretty territorial in my area as well, but that all seems to go out the window when it's 100+° and the other neighboring feeders are empty. Hunger plus heat equals sharing I guess. 🤷

People have pointed out how you can be poisoning the birds if the nectar is bad, but wouldn't they just not drink it, like how every animal has the ability to avoid toxic water?

You can make your own (which is actually preferable since there's no additives or dyes) by mixing 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. So ¼ cup sugar to 8oz water brings the bird butts to the yard.
