I was told a long time ago that whenever using the disposer, it helps to allow the water to continue to run a bit after turning off the disposer. Also, I try to avoid letting grease get in there.

i wouldn't use Ice unless you have something that is new as in the older disposable machines tend to break easily if you use ice since it can't crush the ice.

Correction: The ice helps dislodge food particles on the blades and remove built up grime. It won't sharpen them as ice does not have a hardness level strong enough to grind the metal to an edge.
