You are still able to switch your sim card to another phone, for example if you bought a phone from the Google Store (3rd party). You WON'T be able to "upgrade from Verizon" for another 3 years.

So if I "upgrade" I'm only offered $400 for my phone trade in. However if I add a line and select to trade in my old device, I get the $800. So to give up my old number, I am saving an extra $400....
