i dont think the mesh zen line is terrible, though wired backhaul is preferred if theres no dedicated 4x4 wireless backhaul. Hopping nodes suck :)

Exactly what I was thinking. In fact, i assumed xd6 was basically that, since it's made by Asus. But the more I read about zenwifi, the more issues I hear about. Seems that zenwifi line is pretty...

oh sorry thought you were the original guy i was replying too. Could always buy multiple asus routers with good radios and wire backhaul those. Prob most effective, but pricey solution.

Thanks. I actually have 1gbps Google fiber and home offices are hard wired. I've been lazy about updating our WiFi. I would be able to setup xd6 with hard wire backhaul. But I'm leaning towards...

Since youre on low ISP speed, it should work fine but mesh systems without a wireless backhaul usually are good for up to 500mbps hopping from main node. The problem with mesh and hopping is...

Appreciate your insightful replies. What are your thoughts on the zenwifi units? Bought the zenwifi xd6 and debating whether to try it out or return. Historically have used Asus T-Mobile ac1900.

is the life time security locked behind allowing asus to track your internet activity? i had an asus router and to access a lot of the functionality.. it required permission to track internet...

Certainly the best deal on a 4x4 AX router. I've tried higher end options like GT-AX6000 (gen 2 Broadcom AX platform) and the AX86S performed better in my environment via 2x2 clients at range. ...

I may go that route, thank you, though no price match needed currently which makes it even easier.

No local best buy? Could likely price match amazons 180 USD price point and trade in a random 10 year old router to get the price down to $153 plus tax. I think that price is fair vs market...

Ok, thank you for the additional details! I will see if I can hold out for an AX deal... It looks like the AX86S $180 deal is back at Best Buy.

The downside of the GT-AC2900/AC86U is that it wont be updated like newer models aside from security patches. The AX86S will continue to get updates for a bit longer, through the RAM use is high...

Thank you for the details! ISP is sloooow, so unfortunately that is not speed a factor right now. Do not have much network cable so most things, even desktops, are on WIFI though. To ensure I am...

GT-AC2900 has RGB LED's and supports "160mhz", though I wouldn't recommend using 160mhz on this router since the older radio design forces a 2x2+2x2 config and will limit range on legacy clients with...

I apologize if it is a stupid question, but what is the different RT-AC2900 and GT-AC2900? Would you buy a 4x4 AC right now or pay the premium for a 4x4 AX? Thank you!

Depends on home, but Higher MIMO usually indicates a better router and generally allows clients to grab onto broadcast signals easier than entry stuff with 2x2 config. The AC86U/GT-AC2900 are AC...

Do you have a recommendation on what would be the best ASUS access point? pfSense is doing the routing, but in need a new access point. Have had good luck with ASUS in the past and figure should...

I have this router after upgrading from an older generation ASUS router. While it's a heck of a workhorse with great range and speeds, if you want run Merlin, you'll want to look elsewhere as I was...
