I feel like every Japanese or European can I've touched over the last two decades have been 5/8. My 13/16 socket hasn't seen much action, except for on the '65 Nova with the 350 small block.

Not a good assumption to make. If the plug seized in the thread then an alternate assumption would be that the sealed in plug would keep more water out. Only an examination after the plug's removed...

So I would imagine if the plugs threads rusted into the heads the rusts is throughout the cylinders, valve seats etc. so complete rebuild is needed anyways.

Twenty First century spark plug wrench. If you do your own tune-ups, do yourself a favor and buy this tool. Then toss your old rubber lined plug wrench in the trash.
