If you change your mind after doing the restart trick, there’s an option in the menu to claim the Kids+ subscription. But doing so might enable ads if you exit kids mode, not sure.

Correct. It's not for those of us who want the actual Kids' sub. I suspect you could reset the Kindle after the Kids' sub runs out and do the above, but I can't say for sure it will work then.
