For really old construction Philips strip even quicker since lumber is much harder than new pine but screws tend to split wood more often than nails so for some cases I would choose nails over screws.

Same here. I use #2 bits all the time, and most are... well, they suck. I bought some bits with some features that supposedly gave them better grip. I am not here to extol their claims and virtues....
