Then stop using fabric softener and wash them til the smell is gone. You should probably use an unscented product if you don't want a scent.

Yes. It’s not instant. Takes some time. Follow up with a low pressure sidewalk cleaner. Than it’s just a matter of wetting it down whenever you see some mold or mildew.
