You would have to return the batteries with the receipt. Then do a return on the lamp without a receipt. frowned upon, yes.

I tried to do the hack with a pro account. It wouldn't let me cancel individual items there was a warning you had to contact customer service within 45 minutes to cancel which seems pretty stupid

That’s what I did. Home Depot discounts the price of the combo and battery in the cart instead of just making the battery free, right after you order you can go to your recent orders and hit cancel...
