This is perfect for NAS, setup where you can have old spinning drives but these for spinning up VMs or Caching. I have the same but in 2 TB, a bit pricey though.

IMO not overkill :) got four of them and a T700 for my new build.
Fast CPU and GPU is great but day to day storage speed is what makes the computer "fast" to use.
I do photo and video editing...
