i was actually able to switch to 75 Hz and it is working. apparently that is close to the limit for 1440p res. 4k limited at 30 Hz. so the dell specs could be more clear.

Sounds like you're good then. Some monitors won't do 2560x1440 at 60Hz over HDMI so maybe that's why they put that in the specs.

I think that technically 1.4 can support 2560x1440 at 60Hz but will only do 30Hz at that resolution with some monitors.
