If already have Active Ultimate it only adds 4 months. if expired or new sub it converts it to 8 months of ultimate if redeem it first then Game Pass Trial or 1 month code.

Microsoft changed the conversion rate for new / expired Ultimate subscriptions last July. 1:1 conversion rate is dead, it's now 3:2.
So 12 months Core will convert into 8 months Ultimate.
