Old work has two screws that pull a plastic tab up against a piece of drywall you cut a rectangular hole in. New work is when drywall is not put up yet and you have a stud you can nail into. Always...

And by power cables, this means non-metallic (e.g. Romex) or other approved in-wall high voltage wires. Don't run power cords in the wall, ever.

In old work you cut the hole from outside, push the box in and secure it with tabs without the need to open the wall. I use those to add extra outlets or Ethernet wiring.

The plastic tabs that you shove the Romex through on these suck. They usually break due to brittle plastic. Not really an issue but something to be aware of.

These grey boxes are not quite as good of quality as the blue ones. But still work if you’re careful not to screw them too tight.

yeah this tab type might work ok on fiberglass-reinforced 5/8 type x drywall but will probably destroy 1/2 drywall in time. i'm a big fan of the screw-in type too
