What are you talking about? The only place you don't have direct brake access on a drop bar bike are the flats/tops and the bottom of the drops. Have you even seen a drop bar bike?

Exactly. I'm either on the hoods or the drops. Maybe I just have large hands, but trying to ride on the flat part of the bar is uncomfortable and feels too narrow.

I love how no one actually rides on roads it seems.
Vintage drop bars had two brake levers per handle. This way if you had to brake suddenly you didn't need to move your hands.

They don't brake any differently than any other bike brakes. Unless you strictly ride bikes with coaster brakes. There is also not really anything unique to modern drops or brakes compared to bars...
