It looks like they do make a music sync box that you can use so you don’t have to use your phone’s microphone but at $28 with coupon it seems expensive compared to this deal.

Once cut you're left with 1 string that can be controlled. (I don't know of an LED that will allow you to use the cut off piece but I'm sure it exists somewhere...)
