That's just a general defect, even the costco copies will sometimes leak around the filter as well, return until you get a good one.

No, the brita does not do as well as the zero. I send it through a brita first because the filters are cheaper than zero, then send it through a zero. Two pitchers in fridge, but that's o.k.
