a case that was built for this PSU
a ATX full tower case
It obviously wont fit a ITX micro case but I would avoid this...

They call it a backplane, but it's more like a breakout board.
If you have a case specifically designed for it, that would be ideal.
But there's nothing saying you couldn't mount it elsewhere...

Most all SATA/SAS controllers circa 2005 had Staggered Spin-Up (SSU).
Some LSI HBAs require separate power if the motherboard pcie slots don't carry higher supply current.

Not necessarily proprietary, just extremely purpose built.
You gain nothing by using this in a regular case, if we're cutting to the point.
