Got my copy and already opened! Great to see the lovingly drawn illustrations by the master himself. They say a picture paints a thousand words, but for Tolkien I would say his words paint thousands...

I have the hard cover version of LOTR and a cheap paper back version of LOTR that is lovingly wrapped in clear tape in the corners. The hard cover version never gets read, but it sure does look good...

Fall apart...poorly printed...it almost sounds like you're talking about taking it out of the shrink wrap. To paraphrase a wise wizard: keep it sealed, keep it safe.

Those clothbound versions fall apart, according to reviews, and are poorly printed. Nothing to justify the massive price jump. And I say this as someone who owns like 10 copies of LOTR.

here is a summary of the book: ""The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien is a complex and richly detailed collection of mythopoeic stories, serving as a prelude to "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the...

I got stuck the first time and didn’t come back for almost a decade. After finishing it with the second attempt, it truly is a masterpiece.

I first read the Silmarillion over 30 years ago when I was in high school and was not too crazy about it. I have since reread it twice, and enjoy it more each time. This is what I had hoped the...

Agreed. I loved it once I came into it with the mindset of "I'm about to read the bible of an alien world"

I highly recommend re-reading the Silmarillion. I was also repelled by it my first time, and now it's my favorite of the series. It's written in an elevated register similar to that of the King...

Agreed, totally fair to not enjoy the book. It's less of a story and more like reading the rulebooks or manuals for an pen and paper RPG. It's not everyone's choice of pipeweed.

I agree, it can be tough getting past the first 50 pages, but then my brain just clicked with the language and the rest was history. Also a big Tolkien fan and my favorite of his books.
