I installed Windows 7 on a virtual machine using the SP1 ISOs as provided and I didn't encounter the "files not found" errors. There's something wrong with your hardware or installation media.

I agree, i'd recommend actually just forgoing the DVD media and make it a bootable flash drive http://wintoflash.com/home/en/ makes things very simple.

depending upon the brand of computer, like some of the older dells came with a special XP image CD that self activated by the dell bios. so, those license stickers might not work on a regular copy....
